The Met Gala’s Five Best Beauty Looks
The stars came out en masse on Monday to celebrate fashion’s biggest night: The Met Gala. This year’s theme, Camp, was inspired by the essay Notes on Camp by Susan Sontag and left quite a bit of room for interpretation. As usual, there were some hits and some misses, but the hits turned out some of the most creative beauty looks we have seen in recent years. Given the opportunity to go all out and celebrate the absurd, these celebrities rose to the occasion.
1. Billy Porter
Let’s start with Met Gala first-timer Billy Porter, who stole the entire show. If you’re familiar with Porter’s previous red carpet looks, you won’t be surprised to find that this Broadway and TV star embraced the year’s theme wholeheartedly.
This wildly glamorous, golden Egyptian-inspired beauty look will go down in the books as one of the most successful in Met Gala history. Not only does it fully celebrate the theme of the evening, but the level of sheer artistry elevates it to new heights. It’s a joy to look at, with shimmering eye sequins and a stunning gold lip courtesy of Pat McGrath makeup products. A match made in beauty heaven!
2. Laverne Cox
Next up, the divine Laverne Cox, who nailed this ethereal pastel blue makeup look. The soft shade looks absolutely stunning with her skin tone and matches her hair perfectly. It has whiffs of The Hunger Games, but better.
This was her makeup artist Deja Smith’s first Met Gala and she knocked it out of the park. The juxtaposition of the eyeshadow with that sweet pink blush and deep, shimmering magenta lips gives Laverne an otherworldly appearance. She nailed it.
3. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga stunned the crowd with four outfit changes on the red carpet, but her makeup game was just as compelling. We wouldn’t expect anything less than perfection from this Met Gala co-chair, and she delivered.
Gaga’s electric pink lips just happen to be the perfect shade for summer, and they come courtesy of Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Flaming-oh and Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick in Sweet Escape. You may have seen Lady Gaga re-apply the lip gloss on the carpet. She was fully committed to the act, as always.
The real showstopper, however, was Gaga’s eye makeup. Heavily lined with dark black and lavender liquid liner and surrounded with long fluttery lashes and golden spikes, it’s a wonder that they stayed on while she pranced around.
4. Priyanka Chopra
Also rocking Marc Jacobs Beauty was Priyanka Chopra, who looked like an absolute dream. Inspired by Louix XIV and his royal court, Priyanka’s makeup artist Pati Dubroff channeled an extreme Dior runway look and the edgy spirit of Bowie. It’s a beautiful blend of fantasy and couture.
The combination of the berry shades on her lips, cheek, and eye were given the ice queen treatment thanks to the addition of dramatic, thick white liner on her waterline and white-tipped lashes. Dubroff even blocked out Chopra’s eyebrows, giving her a wide-eyed, alien look. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
5. Lily Collins
Lily Collins looked as sweet as can be, channeling Dolly Parton, Sharon Tate, and Priscilla Presley with a pastel makeup look and sky-high hair. Her violet eyeshadow is absolutely gorgeous and makes the perfect frame for her lovely doe eyes.
Black liquid winged eyeliner, fanned out lashes, pale pink cheeks and lips, and Lily’s enviable full brows round out this retro wedding/painted vintage doll aesthetic. It’s the perfect compliment to her stunning Giambattista Valli Couture gown.
There’s nothing more gratifying than when celebrities are game to try something new and put themselves out there. This year, the men were just as daring as the women and colorful makeup aesthetics were embraced after years of simple nude looks. It’s the perfect way to usher in the summer season.
