Were the Most Hyped Makeup Products of 2018 Diverse Enough?
From the Tarte Shape Tape foundation fiasco to the comeback of the ABH Amrezy highlighter, 2018 has the best and worst of the makeup world. Since the fall of 2017, the Fenty Effect has set a new standard for complexion products. Expectations are high, Twitter reactions are plentiful, and tea is always hot. But has any progress been made? This is how five of this year’s most hyped makeup releases did in the diversity category.
Makeup Revolution Full Coverage Concealer
With 18 shades to start, this concealer came in three shades each for fair, light, medium, tan, deep, and rich skin tones. Their launch included warm, neutral and cool undertones and was the perfect example of an inclusive launch. Other brands take notes!
2. Beauty Blender Bounce Foundation
Everyone’s favorite makeup sponge stepped into the world of complexion products with their first ever foundation. While their packaging was innovative, it didn’t make up for their underwhelming shade range. Out of 32 shades, there were only about four for deep and rich skin tones. No filter needed.
3. MAC Lipstick Collaborations
It was great to see MAC collaborate with more beauty influencers of color this year. Nyma Tang made a universal cherry red lipstick and Patricia Bright made the ultimate 90s brown girl nude.
4. KKW x Mario Eyeshadow Palette
Maybe it was the nostalgia for the ABH Master Palette by Mario, but this eyeshadow palette was just okay. The crease, transition, and outer corner shades become more limited as you get to deep and rich skin tones. It’s a small step up from the KKW contour sticks.
5. Fenty Beauty Kilowatt Foil Highlighters Duos
Beach please! These fun highlighters came in three different shade duos with one to suit everyone. Now all we need is some Fenty music!
