Atima Lui Speaks on Pi Group Annual Speaker Series on Artificial Intelligence Panel
On November 1st, 2018, Atima Lui, CEO and Founder of NUDEST spoke on a panel in the 2018 Pi Group Annual Speaker Series on Artificial Intelligence at WeWork Bryant Park. Atima was the youngest of the eight individuals who participated in the discussion. The event was organized by Perpetual Insights, a Professional Recruitment and Talent Advisory firm, which has been named one of Inc Magazine’s 5000 fastest growing companies in the US in 2018.
The evening included a Keynote speech by the director of Artificial Intelligence at PwC, Rob McCargow, followed by the panel. The crowd resonated with several of Atima’s sentiments. Among them, her response to a question about the role of Artificial Intelligence in the workforce and its effects on diversity and inclusivity. Here, she referenced Amazon’s discovery of gender bias in their new recruiting machine, which had been caused by unconscious prejudice of their own team, and that other AI may may exhibit similar biases.
Because of the racial and gender partiality caused by biased engineering teams, AI software often generates bad results for women and people of color. Atima went on to explain why NUDEST’s work is so important. Her point highlighted the value of her mission to ensure color recognition of all skin types, that comes naturally by having a diverse team that brings critical thinking and experience on skin tone inclusivity to the table. This mission will subsequently have a huge impact in the beauty industry and among consumers.
